What part will you play?
This is a national digital Senior Writer who covers policing as a full-time beat. This role will report into the National Digital News Desk and partner closely with the beat leader, key teams in digital and in newsgathering. While this is a breaking news role, this Senior Writer is not a traditional breaking news writer. Instead, this Senior Writer will be sourced enough to break national news on his/her beat, nimble enough to identify and produce enterprising and explanatory policing angles on big national news developments. The Senior Writer will help bring coverage to CNN Digital and TV networks that show the impact police have on communities and individuals, the power that police hold and how they wield that power, the state of training, equipping and funding of the police.
The Senior Writer also will be a key collaborator in helping organize and plan with other CNN contributors who cover policing, law enforcement, culture and race. Because this role is key to all CNN platforms, this Senior Writer must be skilled at discussing, explaining and putting into context the key issues of the beat and beat coverage on CNN’s television platforms.
This Senior Writer is a best in class shaper and sharpener of stories and ideas and a team player who can work across CNN’s news platforms and teams in service of getting the best content to our vast audiences. She/He is a true partner in identifying distinctive angles on top stories and finding distinctive stories on the beat.
What will you be doing?
This Senior Writer will research and write high-impact news and distinctive stories. She/he will use data to break news, show national trends, tell stories of where the system is working and where it’s broken. A daily challenge will be to tell the stories from this beat that don’t solely represent the perspective of the police, but that offer a full view of policing as seen from individuals and communities who value or question their authority and their techniques.
This Senior Writer will be a creative force who consistently pitches and executes distinctive coverage of policing in America, to help us elevate our coverage of police beyond spot news.
She/he will write with clarity, voice and context. This Senior Writer will demonstrate a high pace of activity and deep curiosity about current events, issues and the diverse voices that define policing in this country. She/he should show a high level of flexibility and the ability to juggle multiple tasks at once.
Idea generation is key. This is a full-time beat that will be fueled not only by breaking news, but also by the people, issues and cultural changes that have not made yet made news.
This is a varied jobsome days may be fast and furious as you work on a single and fast-flowing developing story, some days will be focused on reporting and producing a deeper dive on a key topic, some days may involve contributing to on-air coverage of key developments on the beat.
